Vegetable varieties for a balcony garden

If you dream of growing your own vegetables but are short on space, a balcony garden is the perfect solution. Discover the ideal vegetable varieties to grow on your balcony and enjoy fresh produce all season long.

Cherry tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are perfect for growing in pots. They don't take up much space and provide a bountiful harvest. About 5 to 6 cherry tomato plants can be grown in a single medium-sized pot.

Root vegetables

Radishes are quick to grow. They grow easily in shallow containers and can be harvested in as little as 3 weeks. Perfect for gardening beginners! Also consider carrots, turnips, and beets.

Leafy vegetables

Salad greens, such as lettuce or rocket, are ideal for growing in pots. They grow quickly and can be harvested leaf by leaf, allowing for a continuous harvest throughout the season. You could also grow spinach.

Peppers

Peppers can also be successfully grown on a sunny balcony. Choose compact varieties that adapt well to small spaces. Peppers are rich in vitamins and bring a splash of color to your vegetable balcony.

Cucumbers

Although they don't like to have their roots played with, cucumbers can be grown in pots. Wait until the last frost and sow them directly in the vegetable garden. You can also place a chamomile plant next to it, this will help it stay in shape.

Aromatic herbs

Herbs such as basil, parsley, thyme, chives or mint are perfect for growing in pots. They add flavour to your dishes and can be easily grown on a sunny balcony.

Dwarf varieties

You can find several vegetables and fruits that grow in compact format. Very good choice for a balcony vegetable garden. Short cake raspberry, dwarf bean, dwarf tomato could be an interesting addition.

Strawberries

Given their size, strawberries are easy to grow on a balcony. However, I advise you to buy seedlings. This fruit is not always easy to grow from seedlings for beginners.

Flowers

Not only are they pretty, but some flowers help you keep your vegetable garden healthy. In fact, they can either repel certain insects (which could ravage your crops) or attract those that are good for the garden. Nasturtium, Pansy, Marigold are just a few examples among others.

Advice

Start by measuring your space (width, length, height), to know what you will be able to put there.
To optimize its use, making a plan could be very useful.
You will be able to choose the size (depth and diameter) of your containers and plan the layout of your vegetable garden.
Generally, pots 30 to 40 cm deep will be sufficient to accommodate the majority of these vegetables.
Planters 15 to 20 cm deep are particularly suitable for herbs, leafy vegetables and root vegetables.
Some vegetables can also be hung or placed in towers. Placing them this way will allow you, among other things, to save floor space.
You can also opt for raised planters.
If the diameter of your container allows it, you can put several plants together. However, you will have to take into account the spacing required between them and what is called "Companion planting".

By choosing the right vegetable varieties, you can create a productive and tasty balcony vegetable garden. Be sure to provide regular watering, good drainage, and adequate sunlight to ensure the success of your container vegetable garden.
So what are you waiting for? Get started!
